Designer House Mary Douglas Drysdale at the Richmond Symphony

An opportunity to experience a room by Mary Douglas Drysdale is not to be missed. Last Friday I had the chance to do just that at the Richmond Symphony Designer Showhouse. Mary designed the living room with a nod to America's past and an eye to the future. It is an unparalled combination of bold pieces and subtle, meaningful details. The result is an elegant, seamless room that is both welcoming and stunning.
A Great Dane sculpture by Mark Perry is the focal point above the fireplace - unexpected and enjoyable all at once.
A curved settee is paired with a monochromatic graphic pillow. The seating in the room was enveloped in Sandra Jordan's alpaca and curved and straight lines were balanced throughout the space. Artwork subtly referenced our nation's past and its future direction.
Here's Mary with the uber talented Tobi Fairley who created a stunning Stair Hall with traditional furniture treated with modern painted finishes and fabrics. I loved the color palette too - light blues with accents of red.
My dear friend Anne with Mary - who was the epitome of graciousness. You may have noticed the bare feet. Depending on the shoes you had, the protective foot coverings could be a bit slippery. But this brings me to another element of Mary's design - pattern. The gorgeous patterned cognac floor with light and dark accents (hard to see in my photos) and the pattern on the curtains were designed by Mary. Tom Hickey of Rising Tide Inc. is the decorative artist that beautifully executed the floor design.

Predicting Red for 2011 Color of the Year

I'll either look back at this post fondly or with egg on my face but I have a feeling that red is going to be the Color of the Year in 2011. What do I base this on? It's certainly not any market research but I have been noticing & admiring the color red lately. I emphasize the "admiring" part as I've never been one to care for red and if I'm starting to like it that must mean something (or, nothing at all!) The red bead
chandelier is from Julia Edelmann's design studio in Chicago. You may remember the previous version in turquoise. (I've forgotten who designed this chandelier)

Here's the new Rose Line lamp from CB2 - they chose a red cord. Below is a bar arrangement styled by Ken Chrzastek of Chicago's Mecox Gardens. I think Ken creates the best store vignettes ever and if he's drawn to an all red bar palette...

So, what do you think? Could it be RED or am I totally off-base?

Pretty is what changes

I'm in a philosophical mood today. Yesterday on NPR's Morning Edition, Jessica Queller, author of Pretty is What Changes, talked about her personal journey after learning she had the BRCA breast cancer gene. She referenced a line from a Stephen Sondheim's song - "Pretty is what changes, what the eye arranges is what is beautiful." I happened to be combing through "blog pictures yet to be posted" at the time, and after the interview was finished, my mind wandered back to design. What makes something beautiful? What makes it pretty? Why might you and I look at the same room and have two different reactions? And, does it matter - since it's our eyes that "arrange what is beautiful."

Sewing a Leopard Cushion

This weekend I'm hoping to start-and-finish a cushion for a small bench. The fabric is a white and gray leopard spot that I bought from Pink Wallpaper's Designer's Attic back in October. The gorgeous image of Elvira Manrique de Lara's home from Nuevo Estillo will be my subtle reminder this weekend to get going! (Although I think those chairs are covered in a cheetah print?)

My Notting Hill Revealed Style Home

First, a huge thank you to Lauren of Pure Style Home for including my pepto-pink "master" bath redo in her guest blogger Before & After series. Why the word revealed in this post title? Well, I still can't believe I actually showed just how bad the condition of this bathroom was before doing something about it.(I promise the peeling paint thing happened mostly all at once...) Go here to see the full post on Lauren's blog - including a cost breakdown. Thank you Lauren!

Facebook Headquarters Interior Design by Studio O+A

A new headquarters office for Facebook in Palo Alto, California have been designed by San Francisco based interior design firm Studio O+A. A new headquarters that facilitates interaction and connection, reflecting the company’s mission as a social networking website provider.

Formerly a laboratory facility for high-tech manufacturer Agilent Technologies, the 150,000-square-foot structure at Palo Alto’s Stanford Research Park brings together more than 700 employees originally scattered throughout 10 locations in and around downtown Palo Alto.

The design of the space relied heavily on input from the users, appropriate for a flatly structured company that weights every employee’s opinion equally. O+A designers interviewed employees about what they wanted from their new headquarters.

The Facebook platform was used to conduct company-wide polls about design decisions, post construction photos and updates, and keep everyone informed of the thought process behind the project. An advisory board of employees from every department collaborated with the design team on the design process, from space planning to finishes to final move coordination.

Because the new facility houses employees coming from various locations, the company wanted to maintain each division’s distinct identity. The design takes its inspiration from the patchwork nature of Facebook users and employees, bringing together seemingly disparate elements to form a cohesive pattern and using color and interior spacing to create neighborhoods within the open plan space.

The company’s executives sit in central areas, accessible to all employees. Large lounges and open spaces provide venues for the community to come together. A kitchen and cafĂ© continue Facebook’s tradition of providing gourmet meals to staff at all hours, while drinks and snacks are available at micro-kitchens throughout the headquarters.

Reflecting employees’ desire for a green headquarters, the facility is the first commercial project completed under Palo Alto’s 2008 Green Building Ordinance, making extensive use of existing architectural features, recycling millwork from the original lab, and repurposing industrial components for post-industrial use. Other sustainable features include high recycled-content carpet and energyefficient lighting.

The design goal for the new facility was to maintain the history and raw aesthetic of the building and create a fun dynamic appropriate for the company’s youthful staff. Many walls and spaces are left unfinished: employees are encouraged to write on the walls, add artwork, and move furniture as needed, allowing the building to evolve continuously.
